From cleaning out skimmer baskets on a weekly basis to properly maintaining pool filters and using a pool cover, there are a variety of things you can do to maintain a cleaner swimming pool all year round.
5 Things You Can Do to Maintain a Cleaner Pool
#1. Clean Out the Skimmer Basket Once a Week
The skimmer is located on the side of your pool and is responsible for skimming the surface of the pool before debris have a chance to sink to the bottom. The more efficiently your skimmer works, the cleaner your pool is going to be. To access your skimmer basket, open the round access panel on your deck and empty out the contents of the basket as often as possible.
#2. Clean the Lint Pot
Every couple of weeks, clean the lint pot located on the front of the pool pump. You’ll need to turn off the pump to do this. It is the basket installed inside the clear glass of your swimming pool pump.
#3. Clean Pool Filters
Clean out your pool filter on a regular basis, as needed. They should always be cleaned after a heavy storm, or at least a couple of times per year – every 4 to 6 months. Dirty filters can be soaked in a 10 percent solution of muriatic acid or a solution of TSP (Trisodium Phosphate). This must be done carefully and with the proper protective gear – we recommend leaving it to the professionals.
#4. Use a Pool Cleaner
Skim the top of your pool using a pool skimmer as often as possible to remove debris and leaves, dead bugs and anything else floating at the surface.
#5. Cover Your Swimming Pool
Even if you keep up with cleaning your pool and maintaining the equipment, investing in a pool cover can go a long way. It’ll cut down on energy use and costs, as well as water evaporation.
Covering your pool is the easiest way to keep leaves, twigs, dead bugs, sand – you name it, from getting into your pool. By reducing the debris in your pool, you also reduce the amount of maintenance required to keep the pool clean.
Aside from keeping unwanted debris out of your pool, there are other good reasons to cover your pool, including:
- Reduces chemical use
Simply covering your pool reduces chemical consumption by thirty-five to sixty percent.
- Warmer water
Covering your swimming pool at night will help trap heat collected during the day so that the pool maintains warmer temperatures. Both low cost vinyl pool covers and solar covers will help keep pool temperatures warmer. You might as well make use of the hot Florida sun!
- Slows down evaporation
When your pool is not covered, water evaporates every single day and that means you must fill it up with water more often. Covering your pool reduces water evaporation considerably.
- Save money
A pool cover will generate savings in several ways including lower heating bills, reduced chemical use, and you won’t have to use as much water. Energy costs are also reduced no matter if your pool is heated with gas, electricity or solar.
- Safety first
Investing in a pool cover made from sturdy fiberglass mesh can prevent people from falling into the water, so long as it is properly attached. There are certain fiberglass covers that can support up to 400 pounds per square foot. Although, investing in one of these heavy-duty systems will require the use of a manual or automatic track system.
Tarps and solar covers do not provide any added safety, as someone can still fall in through the cover.
