There are a variety of unique jobs that all relate to cleaning your swimming pool – and they all need to be done in different intervals (monthly, weekly, daily) to ensure your pool remains in top-notch condition. The best way to stay on top of pool maintenance is to hire a professional company to take care of it for you.
One of the best ways to avoid future swimming pool repairs is to keep your pool clean and well maintained. As soon as you notice a spot of algae, a swarm of floating leaves, or a piece of pool equipment that’s making an odd noise, it’s best to take care of it right away before it has a chance to get out of hand.
Additional maintenance is necessary if pets go in your pool, there was a recent storm or surge of hot weather, or if your pool gets a lot of use. On top of regular pool cleaning, you’ll need to establish a schedule for pump cleaning, vacuuming, and tile cleaning.
How Often to Clean Your Pool: What to Do Weekly
- Test pH levels
- Adjust pool chemicals
- Test free available chlorine levels
- Skim the pool to remove insects, leaves and other debris
- Empty the skimmer basket
- Brush the pool walls
- Vacuum the pool
- Clean the line where the pool water meets the pool tile
- Do routine shock treatments (as needed)
You should clean out debris floating in your pool on (at least) a weekly basis. Removing floating leaves and other debris on a daily basis is even better, but not always possible – we get it, life is busy! It’s always easier to remove debris while they are still floating at the top instead of waiting until they become saturated and float to the bottom.
Check pool chemistry on a weekly basis. Make sure that pH levels measure between 7.2 and 7.8. As pH levels rise, chlorine becomes less effective. For instance, chlorine at 8.0 is only around 10 percent active. By properly controlling pH levels, you’ll need to use less chlorine.
Vacuuming your pool on a regular basis is one of the most essential tasks. For one, it removes debris quickly and efficiently, and secondly, it helps control pH levels.
How Often to Clean Your Pool: What to Do Every Few Weeks
- Clean out the lint pot located on the front of the pool pump once every two to three weeks.
You’ll need to turn the pump off in order to do this, as well as release the pressure on the system. It is highly recommended to install a leaf trapper and debris removal system to keep your pool clean. A variable speed or 2-speed pump is ideal; multi-speed pumps are worth the investment.
How Often to Clean Your Pool: What to Do Every Few Months
Close down your pool for a couple of days about once every 2 to 3 months to perform the following tasks:
- Clean your filters using a filter cleaner and degreaser to remove any oil or grease that has accumulated.
- Apply flock or metal remover to your pool – this will take several days to work, and then you’ll need to vacuum the pool.
The Importance of a Clean Pool
There are negative side effects to failing to maintain your pool’s cleanliness. An unkempt pool will result in algae growth. In addition, filters will become clogged and the pool will no longer work to effectively clean itself, giving you more work to do.
By maintaining a clean pool, you increase the longevity of it while preventing costly issues that could otherwise spill over.
